BWANA is the indie-pop and shoegaze project of Belgian artist Friedel Dufait. With melancholic guitar lines, dreamy soundscapes and her deep, powerful voice, she creates a distinctive and immersive sound where layered harmonies play a central role. Her music balances introspective indie pop with atmospheric shoegaze, drawing inspiration from artists such as Slowdive and girl in red.
Initially performing as a one-woman band, playing all instruments herself, Friedel now also brings BWANA to life on stage with a live band. Her honest lyrics and intense performances quickly caught attention, leading to a finalist spot at Sound Track 2021–2022 and a strong showing at Humo’s Rock Rally 2022. In 2024, her talent was further recognised when she won De Nieuwe Lichting from Studio Brussel.
With new music on the horizon and a promising EP in the works, BWANA continues to expand her musical universe. Singles such as Spun A Round and I’m Not Gonna Give In offer a glimpse of an artist ready to leave a lasting mark on the Belgian alternative pop scene.
