Known as one of the sharpest lyricists in Hip-Hop, AZ first caught the world’s attention with his flawless verse on Nas’ Illmatic classic “Life’s a Bitch.” A year later, he dropped his debut Doe or Die — an album that cemented his status with street narratives, lyrical finesse, and timeless production.
From being a founding member of The Firm (alongside Nas, Foxy Brown & Nature) to delivering countless solo gems, AZ’s name is forever etched in Hip-Hop history.

Now, 30 years later, he’s celebrating the album that started it all — performing live, uncut, and straight from Brooklyn to Haarlem.

Biography - AZ

AZ, geboren als Anthony Cruz op 9 maart 1972 in Brooklyn, New York, is een gerespecteerde Amerikaanse rapper die vooral bekend staat om zijn poëtische stijl, scherpe woordenschat en klassieke East Coast sound. Hij brak in 1994 door met zijn legendarische gastvers op Nas' debuutalbum Illmatic – een moment dat hem direct op de kaart zette binnen de hiphopgemeenschap. Kort daarna volgde zijn eigen debuutalbum Doe or Die (1995), dat inmiddels wordt beschouwd als een cultklassieker binnen het genre, met tracks als "Sugar Hill" en "Mo' Money, Mo' Murder". AZ stond jarenlang bekend als één van de meest ondergewaardeerde MC’s in de game, ondanks zijn consistente output en technische skills. Hij maakte deel uit van de supergroep The Firm samen met Nas, Foxy Brown en Nature, en werkte met grote namen als DJ Premier, Pete Rock en Bink. In 2021 maakte hij een sterke comeback met het langverwachte album Doe or Die II, waarmee hij liet zien dat hij nog steeds relevant is in de moderne hiphopscene. Zijn stijl?
