De Zwollenaar groeide uit tot een van Nederlands succesvolste sprinters. Bij de Olympische Spelen van Sotsji 2014 veroverde hij goud op de 500 m en brons op de 1000 m. Hij behaalde ook successen op wereldkampioenschappen. Na zijn afscheid van het profschaatsen begeleidt hij als coach bij Team Novus nieuw talent. In 2024 verraste hij het publiek door Stars on Stage te winnen met zijn zangkwaliteiten, waarmee hij liet zien dat zijn talent verder reikt dan het ijs.
