*Dinner for One* is a comedic sketch originally written for the stage in the 1920s. A century later, Lauri Wylie’s piece is still regularly performed in theaters. Its television adaptation has become a classic—famously broadcast in Germany every New Year’s Eve.
Trea Alers and Bas de Bruijn take on the roles of the wealthy widow Sophie—who, as per tradition, dines on her birthday with her four late husbands—and her butler, James. Sophie vividly imagines her deceased spouses, while James portrays them all, simultaneously serving the meal. In the process, he repeatedly trips over a tiger skin rug (complete with head) lying on the floor.
Usually seen only on (German) television, this performance now comes to life—right before your eyes, just a few meters away—complete with flying food and popping champagne corks! And, if we do say so ourselves, it’s a perfect fit for our intimate, delightful stage!
