A must-see for every Northerner and Groningen local with at least one John Fahey LP in their collection.
Glenn Jones is a veteran of American fingerstyle guitar. In the 1990s, he even recorded an album with Fahey—*The Epiphany of Glenn Jones* (1997)—with his experimental group, Cul de Sac. Since the 2000s, he has released a series of beautiful solo albums influenced by Fahey, Robbie Basho, and Jack Rose. Using standard guitar, 12-string guitar, and banjo, he creates instrumental music that sounds natural and fluid, effortlessly drawing the listener in.
Liam Grant is a much younger offshoot of the solo primitive guitar tradition. He previously performed in Groningen a year and a half ago, where his instrumental set made a strong impression. His slide-played rags, in particular, sounded like a beautiful blend of early Fahey’s country-blues style and the work of Jack Rose. He interspersed these with atmospheric, repetitive pieces on the 12-string guitar. Grant and Jones have been touring together for some time now, first across the US and currently through Europe. No AI, no flashy displays of virtuosity: just two guitarists taking the time to slowly draw you into their musical world.
