The Last Five Years, geschreven en gecomponeerd door Jason Robert Brown, vertelt het verhaal over twee New Yorkers die in vijf jaar tijd van hevige liefde naar een break-up bewegen. Voor de twintigers ligt de wereld aan hun voeten. Actrice Cathy probeert haar plekje te veroveren in de theaterwereld, terwijl romanschrijver Jamie zijn eerste boek publiceert en op de rand van groot succes staat. We volgen Jamie’s verhaal in chronologische volgorde, terwijl we Cathy’s verhaal juist achterstevoren beleven vanaf het einde van hun turbulentie relatie. Hun paden kruisen elkaar slechts één keer, op hun bruiloft.
