The film scores were masterfully composed by John Williams. He wrote the music at his homes in Los Angeles and Tanglewood, subsequently recording it at Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst Studios in London in September 2001.
The film features many distinctive leitmotifs, most of which recurred in the second film of the Harry Potter franchise, *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*. The main theme, "Hedwig's Theme," appears in adapted forms throughout the entire film series. The soundtrack was released on CD on October 30, 2001. It achieved gold certification in Canada (50,000 copies) on December 14, 2001, and in Japan (100,000 copies) in January 2002.
