The 1975 are a British alternative rock band from Manchester. The four members met at Wilmslow High School. They started playing music in 2002. The band's frontman cites Talking Heads, Prince, My Bloody Valentine, Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno and Sigur Rós as musical influences.
To start the band, they spent their early days playing covers of punk songs at a local nightclub. The band played under various names at the time including Talkhouse, The Slowdown and Drive Like You Do before adopting the current name. The name The 1975 came from a book, the frontman says the name was inspired by the deranged and "mental" scribbles found on the back page of Jack Kerouac's book On The Road, which dated back to June 1. Their first EP, 'Facedown', will be released in 2012, of which The City has already achieved airplay on British radio. The title track of their second EP, 'Sex', reached the UK Top 40. In 2013, The 1975 opened for Muse before their self-titled debut album was released in September that year.
