Yann Tiersen is a French composer and musician known for his constant drive for innovation and experimentation. He started playing the piano at a young age, then immersed himself in the punk rock scene as a teenager, playing guitar, synths and electronic equipment. These diverse influences form the basis of his unique musical language to this day.
In his solo work, Tiersen developed a recognisable style that combines piano, electronics and acoustic instruments. His album Le Phare (1998) brought him international recognition and earned him his first gold disc, marking the start of a long international touring career.
His latest album, Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour, shows two sides of his artistic universe. The first part consists of subdued piano pieces, inspired by places and moments during a sailing trip, inviting introspection and tranquillity. The second part strikes a more urgent tone with electronic and psychedelic sounds, in which Tiersen reflects on social structures and the need for change.
