The musical is based on the famous, Oscar-winning 2001 film by director Baz Luhrmann, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The story is set around 1900 in Paris, where a young, penniless writer falls hopelessly in love with the courtesan Satine. The music of Moulin Rouge! The Musical consists of a wide range of songs from the past 160 years, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga. The musical features many of the iconic songs from the film, as well as additions from Adele, Katy Perry, Sia, Rihanna and Beyoncé.
The musical version premiered on Broadway in 2019. For the show, the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway was completely transformed so that visitors feel as if they are in the legendary Moulin Rouge club in Paris. Since its opening, the production has been playing to sold-out audiences and has been awarded ten Tony Awards, the most important and prestigious American theatre awards, including Best Musical of the Year.
